Former Barcelona Star Dani Alves to be Tried for Sexual Assault Charges
1 min readFormer Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, Dani Alves, will face trial on sexual assault charges in Spain, as confirmed by the high court of Catalonia. The incident allegedly took place in a nightclub’s bathroom in late December, and a trial date is yet to be scheduled.
The 40-year-old Brazilian has been in custody without bail due to concerns that he might attempt to flee. Initially, before his arrest, Alves denied knowing the woman in a television interview. However, he changed his statement during the investigation, claiming that their relations were consensual.
If found guilty, Alves could face up to 12 years in jail, but he has asserted his innocence, maintaining a “clear conscience” in a June interview with La Vanguardia. He explained that he initially lied because he feared his wife would leave him if he admitted being with another woman.
The incident occurred during Alves’ holiday in Barcelona after representing Brazil in the World Cup in Qatar. Following his arrest, his Mexican club Pumas UNAM terminated his contract.
Throughout his illustrious career, Alves achieved remarkable success, securing 42 football titles, which includes three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil.
